What customers say?

“ The service was perfect and the atmosphere was very nice. I had the two meat platter with brisket and chicken. The chicken was ok and the brisket was delicious besides having a couple pieces that were overly salty the cornbread is to die for if you like yours a little sweet and the collord greens were good they had a unique taste. The portion sizes could be a little bigger. Overall I would visit and try other things on the menu. ”

“ We had the three meat platter and half rack of ribs and were very impressed! The collards are the best I’ve had, the cornbread is amazing and the yams are sweet in all the right ways. It feels like there’s a lot of love put in to this food - we loved everything we got and the portions and prices were extremely reasonable. Patrick took great care of us at the bar and made delicious cocktails. We’ll be back to try the brunch and for dinner again soon! ”

“ I embarked on an unexpected gastronomic journey with a group of friends on a late Wednesday evening at Frontier by Alamo in Church Hill. Despite it being close to closing time, we were graciously accommodated - a testament to their commendable service. Starting our meal with draft Narragansets priced at a reasonable $5 each, we were not disappointed. Our server was generous with the pours, filling each glass to the brim and offering an ideal prelude to our culinary experience. Diving into the main course, I opted for the Alamo Cuban. The sandwich was robust in flavor, the ingredients well balanced, although the bread was a tad too crunchy for my preference. A slightly lesser degree of toasting would have elevated the sandwich to perfection. Nevertheless, it remained a pleasing dish. Our party also tried the Southwest Caesar Salad, which managed to satiate even a non-BBQ enthusiast. This was a demonstration of the menu's versatility, providing options that cater to a variety of taste profiles. A delightful surprise was the cheesy enchiladas, which proved so generous in portion that we took some home. The same can be said for the Pulled Rotisserie Chicken Sandwiches. Our companions reported them to be quite satisfying, delivering on both taste and quantity. The Texas Trainwreck deserves a mention, not only for its deliciousness but also for its sheer value for money. It truly encapsulates the restaurant's commitment to serving hearty, comforting meals without burning a hole in your pocket. No meal at Frontier by Alamo is complete without their sides. The jalapeno mac and cheese was a particular standout, providing a wonderful blend of creamy, cheesy goodness with a fiery kick of jalapenos. The mac and cheese, as well as the French fries, received universal acclaim from our group, further enhancing the overall dining experience. As for the ambiance, Frontier by Alamo offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere, complemented by polite, helpful staff who enhanced our late-night visit. One amusing observation was a random printer in the dining room. Not sure why it was there, but I had to mention it. In conclusion, our night at Frontier by Alamo was filled with flavorful food, delightful drinks, and hearty laughter. A minor hiccup with the overly toasted bread and the misplaced printer were far outweighed by the positives. A must-visit in Church Hill for those seeking delicious, affordable food in a convivial atmosphere. ”

“ If you like honest reviews, follow me for more. Came to St. John's Church and grabbed a bite to eat afterwards. Actually went to another restaurant first but there was a 10 min wait so we walked back to here where we were able to sit immediately. Our waitress was attentive and she double checked our orders when she gave them to the "kitchen". My boyfriend ordered a Texas Trainwreck (BBQ on top of jalapeno mac n cheese with cornbread, onions, beans, and two slices of jalapeno), and I got BBQ nachos. We both opted for "pulled" pork. My nachos came topped with iceberg (NOT a fan) and I added a side of Texas caviar (pico with beans and corn). The BBQ was pretty fatty, indicating it isn't slow cooked, and it had some pretty big chunks which isn't usually the case when the meat is pulled off the pig. That being said, the food was tasty and reasonably priced. If we lived here we'd likely come back. ”

“ Can't wait for the "real" Alamo to re-open!! Frontier has a nice bar and decent food but the original walk-up with outdoor seating is my fav.... Ribs were very good as was the Black Beans and Rice. Mac and Cheese was better than most. ”

“ This place was a wonderful surprise! Great service, warm and welcoming (the AC works great, not that kinda warm ), and good food / drinks! Frontier by Alamo is going on my, "good food in RVA" list and I'm excited to bring friends and family to this hidden honey hole! ”

“ So, the food was delicious and portioned well, and the bear was friendly, but I really came to highlight Noelle. It was one of those days where a series of factors left them understaffed, and she kept the place going! Friendly, professional, and attentive as she bounced from table to table and worked to keep everyone happy. Fantastic service from her that made the wait not sting. ”
